Sophomore Cody Gibbs clears the hurdle in the 100 meter hurdles.

The Eureka County High School Track and Field team battled both the wind and their opponents at their home field meet on April 22. Twelve teams travelled to Eureka to compete at the annual event.

Senior Megan Damele led the Lady Vandals to a third place team finish behind White Pine and Spring Creek and captured four first place finishes.

Damele placed first in the 100 meters crossing the line at 12.84, the 200 meters with a time of 26.97, the 400 meters at 1.06.5 and the long jump at 16’ 5.5”.

Junior Katie Damele took a first in the mile at 6.15.84 and a second in the 800 meter with a time of 2.50.29. She also placed 10th in the shot with a throw of 25’11.5”.

The 4×100 relay team consisting of Elsie Etchegaray, Angelika Townsend, Jiselle Dominguez, and Cody Gibbs took a first place at 56.52 while the 4×200 team with same members placed fourth with a time of 2.02.33.

Sophomore Cody Gibbs had a good day with a second in the 100 meter hurdles at 16.78 right behind first place White Pine runner Lucy Fullmer at 16.59. Gibbs also took a second in the 300 meter at 53.52 just behind White Pine runner Lilly Fullmer at 52.68.

Freshman Alia Minoletti added to the team total with several placings. Minoletti took home a third in the triple jump at 30’11.5” , a fourth in the high jump at 4’6” , a fifth place in the 400 meter with her time of 1.10.73, and a seventh place in the 800 meter at 3.07.44.

Also placing for the Vandals was Dominguez with a 12th and Angel Greely with a 16th in the 200 meter. Dominguez placed seventh in the long jump at 13’ 1.5”. Greely also placed fifth in the 800 meter at 2.57.34 and 12th in the discus at 73’ 1”.

Freshman Townsend had a strong showing in the 400 meters placing fourth with a time of 1.09.94 and fourth in the triple jump at 29’ 11.5”.

Senior Etchegaray also took home a ninth place in the shot with a throw of 27’ 1.5” and a 17th place in the discus at 65’4”. Freshman Melissa Schweble took home a 12th in the shot with her throw of 25’ 7.5” and a 13th in the discus at 71’10”.

The boys team placed a respectable fifth with their smaller team and a couple of absences.

Senior Trevor Merritt took home two third placings and a fourth to lead his team in points. Merritt captured third in the high jump at 5’4”, third in the shot put with a throw of 40’5.25” and fourth in the discus at 109’ 2.5”.

Senior Wyatt Gibbs also had a strong showing with a third place in the discus at 117’ 11.5”, a fourth in the shot at 39’ 6”, a fifth place in the high jump at 5’2”, and a ninth in the triple jump at 34’5”.

Senior Stephen Watts placed sixth in the two mile with his time of 13.23.99 and finished eleventh in the mile with a time of 5.58.81.

Thrower Tristan Birchim placed 7th in the discus at 101’10” and 12th in shot with a throw of 33’10.75”.
Freshman Garrett Todd added a eighth place in the 400 meter at 1.09.33, a sixth place in the high jump at 5’ even and a tenth place in the long jump with a 15’10.5” jump. Steel Raine, also a freshman, placed tenth in the two mile at 19.12.34 and 23rd in the mile with a time of 7.13.28.

Two seniors were absent as distance runner Brendan Mears had a prior commitment and Errol Porter was out with an injury.
