Eureka wrestling coach Jeremy Auch reports three of his five wrestlers participated in the Ely Lions Invitational Dec. 21 in Ely after an illness and an injury.

The boys who did wrestle were Ashton Sanders (120), Chris Dolan (145) and Preston Hubbard (152).

“It was a round robin tournament,” Auch said, “where there were only four in each weight class, so you wrestled each of the others.”

Sanders first had a win by fall over Austin Mathews of Lincoln County, but then his second match to a person from West Wendover whom Auch couldn’t remember the name of. His last match he lost by pin to Jose Guizar of Battle Mountain.

Dolan at 145 pounds won his first match by a 12-4 decision over Sebastian Lyons of White Pine, then beat a person from West Wendover also. But he lost the third match to Bobby Kester of Battle Mountain.

Preston Hubbard (152) lost all of his matches. First to Nick Bourne of Lincoln County, then to Eric Pickens of White Pine and Fabian Castaneda of Battle Mountain.

After the New Year, the Vandals have a tournament in Sparks, Jan. 5-6.

Auch continues to have the wrestlers focus on “wrestling the kid and not the school he comes from. Anyone can be beaten.”
