10th annual Eureka Car Show brings plenty of fun to town

ureka Car Show was held May 26-27. “We changed the dates this year,” said organizer Scooter Mentaberry. “It has been held on Mother’s Day weekend, but that was often difficult with the weather.”

Seventy-six entrants signed up for the event which was held Saturday morning on Main Street in town. “The numbers were about in line with what we have had in previous years,” Mentaberry said, “and our first Memorial Day weekend car show went off really well. The longer weekend, plus the better weather made it more possible for folks to spend more time.”

Competitors came from Nevada, California, Idaho and Utah.

Mentaberry said after the county government cut the funding for the Eureka Activities event coordinator, the County then approached the Eureka Business Network and asked if they wanted to take over operation of local events. “We rely on these events for the summer tourist trade and community enjoyment, and we said we don’t have much choice, so we’ll do it.”

On May 26, a cruise of all the competitors was held along Main Street. Judging and display of the cars took place Saturday. “We had food vendors on hand also, and a couple of arts and crafts vendors.” A dance was held Saturday night at the Owl Club featuring a live band.

Mentaberry said there were 15 car classes for judging. “We had trophies for the top three places in each class. $100 for first place, $50 for second.”

An awards brunch at the Owl Club Sunday morning selected Best in Show, the winner of $500 and a trophy, as the 1935 black Ford pickup by Dick Brazeal of Carlin.

A few other selected winners included the Custom Car class, a 1964 Chevy Impala by Jeff and Stormy Remington of Wells; Best Hot Rod, a 1938 Chevy coupe by Rick Jarvis of Bishop, California; and Best Rat Rod, a 1921 Chevy pickup by Chelsea Moody of Eureka.

Following the Sunday brunch, Mentaberry said they held drag races out at the airport “for whoever wanted to show up.”
