Hay contest winners announced

The University of Nevada Cooperative Extension, in cooperation with other supporters, sponsored the Eureka County Fair Hay Contest Aug. 9

The University of Nevada Cooperative Extension, in cooperation with other supporters, sponsored the Eureka County Fair Hay Contest Aug. 9 at the Eureka County Fairgrounds. Hay entries were judged by Mylen Bohle from Oregon State University Extension. The entries were ranked using the Hay Quality Sensory Evaluation Guidelines evaluation system, which accounts for protein, fiber digestibility and energy. Entries competed in five classes: alfalfa, timothy, orchard grass, mixed hay and grain hay.

Bob Burnham captured Overall Grand Champion in the contest with an entry in the timothy category. Mark Moyle Farm received the Overall Reserve Champion.

Other category winners are:

Alfalfa Hay Class:
• First Place – Conley Land & Livestock
• Second Place – Jim Baumann
• Third Place – Jim Gallagher

Timothy Hay Class:
• First Place – Bob Burnham
• Second Place – Mark Moyle Farm
• Third Place – DV Hay

Orchard Hay Class:
• First Place – Mark Moyle Farm
• Second Place – DV Hay

Mixed Hay Class:
• First Place – Mark Moyle Farm
• Second Place – Dubray Farm
• Third Place – Bill Marshall Farm

Grain Hay Class:
• First Place – Mark Moyle Fars
• Second Place – Don Palmore

The University of Nevada Cooperative Extension expressed gratitude to all contestants for their participation and encouraged all Diamond Valley Hay producers to participate in next year’s contest to showcase Eureka’s top-quality hay.
