The Eureka County High girls basketball team at Eureka County High School played the first ever game on their new floor and in the new multi-million dollar gym. The excitement from the new gym was matched by the excitement of the girls varsity game against the Wells Leopards and Eureka won an overtime thriller 61-60.
Eureka dominated the first half and owned a 33-20 lead against. The second half was a different story however. Wells and their head coach noticed that the Lady Vandals were trying to dribble out of the press instead of passing out of the pressure.
Wells brought pressure the rest of the game which caused quite a few turnovers for Eureka and let the Lady Leopards tie the game and eventually take a lead late in the fourth quarter. As the final seconds of regulation ticked off the scoreboard, Eureka’s Shara Green drove toward the basket and pulled up for a 8-foot jump shot which rattled around the rim and finally through the hoop to send the gym into a roar and to send the game into overtime. Eureka and Wells continued to keep the game close, but Eureka’s good free throw shooting ultimately help Eureka squeak out the one-point win. Green led Eureka with 21 points.
Eureka took on Jackpot the following day and won the game easily to give them a 53-8 win against a young Jackpot to bring their league record to 3-1. They will play again at home Friday night against McDermitt who hasn’t lost a league game.
