Strong storm prompts tornado warning

The national Weather Service in Elko issued a tornado warning for southwestern Eureka County and east central Lander County last Thursday evening as a strong thunderstorm moved through the area.
According to the weather service, a dangerous life threatening storm was located 9 miles southwest of Grass Valley and moving north at 15 mph at the time. The storm eventually weakened below severe limits and exited the area, though strong storms were reported. There were no reports of damage or injury.

The tornado warning replaced an original severe thunderstorm warning.

When a tornado warning is issued it typically means that severe weather is imminent and is based on specific criteria and existing reports received by the National Weather Service.

Three-tenths of an inch of rain was recorded in Eureka that day, one-tenth more than the old record set in 2000. Elko received two inches of snow early the next day, breaking the old record of .6 inch dating to 1979.
