Eureka County Fair hay contest winners announced

The University of Nevada Cooperative Extension, in cooperation with other supporters, sponsored the Eureka County Fair hay contest Aug. 7, 2015 at the Eureka County Fairgrounds.

Hay entries were judged by James Smith from Siskiyou County Department of Agriculture, Tulelake, Calif. The entries were ranked using the Hay Quality Sensory Evaluation Guidelines evaluation system, which accounts for protein, fiber digestibility and energy. Entries competed in five classes: alfalfa, timothy, grass hay, mixed hay and grain hay.

Lynford Miller captured Overall Grand Champion in the contest with an entry in the timothy category. Bob Burnham received the Overall Reserve Champion.

Other category winners are:

1st Cutting Alfalfa Hay Class:

First Place – Bob Burnham

Second Place – Don Palmore

Third Place – Conley Land & Livestock

2nd Cutting Alfalfa Hay Class:

First Place – Conley Land & Livestock

Timothy Hay Class:

First Place – Lynford Miller

Second Place – Mark Moyle Farm

Third Place – J&T Farm

Grass Hay Class:

First Place – Mark Moyle Farm

Second Place – Don Palmore

Third Place – Gallagher Farm

Mixed Hay Class:

First Place – Mark Moyle Farm

Grain Hay Class:

First Place – Don Palmore

Second Place – Mark Moyle Farm

The University of Nevada Cooperative Extension expressed gratitude to all contestants for their participation and encouraged all ag producers to participate in next year’s contest to showcase Eureka’s top-quality hay.
