Feb. 25, 1933 – March 6, 2016
Nick Garro passed away March 6, 2016. He was the oldest son of Tirso ad Theresa Garro, Spanish Basque immigrants. Born on February 25, 1933 and followed by two younger brothers, Leno and Mark.
Nick graduated from Eureka County High School in 1950. He was awarded the Harold’s Club scholarship. He was a contributing member of the 1946 NV state”B” basketball championship team. Nick married Claudia Ferguson from Carlin in 1957, together parenting two sons, David and Brent.
He served in the military service from 1953 to 1955 receiving the unique occupation of training and handling war dogs. He deployed to Japan.
His employment career was with the Southern Pacific Railroad companies, 46 years, in various capacities; administration, as a union steward in road service between Sparks and Elko and legislative representative too.
Nick was fond of and was very involved in many aspects of sports. In participation and supporting his alma maters, teaching youngsters and finally as a faithful lifelong fan. Nick was a championship hand ball player and enjoyed playing cards. He belonged to the Coney Island Coffee Club and made many friends there.
Surviving are his wife, Claudia, of 58 years, sons, David and Brent and his wonderful dog, Sugar.
A celebration of life is planned for April 2, 2016 at the Coney Island bar in Sparks, from 1 to 4 p.m.
