Great Basin Native Market Set for Saturday at California Trail Interpretive Center

The Trail Center will celebrate traditional Native American history at the annual Great Basin Native Market on Oct. 21 and 22, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. This family-friendly event is free and open to everyone.

Learn about the history and traditions of Great Basin Native Americans and browse the Native Market featuring handmade crafts, collectibles, jewelry, and more.

“Through Our Own Eyes: A Native American Youth Art Exhibition” will also be featured. The exhibit includes 49 paintings by students from Owyhee Combined School, located on the Duck Valley Indian Reservation.

Also included in the event is a program of the newly established Newe Ghani Cultural Center, along with presentations on Native American lifeways:

Oct. 21, 11 a.m.: The Newe Ghani Cultural Center

James Hedrick, cultural manager for the future Newe Ghani Cultural Center, will provide an update on the Center that will be located at the Elko Indian Colony. The Center will have representatives from nine of the Western Shoshone Tribes and will share the Western Shoshone culture with the public. Hedrick will discuss plans for the Center’s development.

Oct. 21, 2 p.m.: The Western Shoshone Language, by the Alfred Jackson Family

The Jackson Family will present a video and discuss how they are working with two young Western Shoshone families in learning the Western Shoshone language.

Oct. 22, 11 a.m.: Nevada Native Plants

Western Shoshone Elder, Darlene Graham, will share her knowledge of using the Nevada native medicine and nourishment.

The California Trail Interpretive Center is located eight miles west of Elko on I-80, Hunter exit 292. The Center is open Wednesday through Sunday, 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Admission is free.
