Eureka Resident Receives the Gift of Mobility

Eureka resident Pamela Lyninger received the gift of mobility on June 21, when the Northern Nevada Center for Independent Living (NNCIL) delivered to her a motorized, rough-terrain wheelchair.

“I’m pretty much trapped at home now and this chair will give me the ability to get outside and putt around town,” she shares.

Lyninger suffered a brain aneurysm in 2004. During surgery, it popped, leaving her with hemiplegia, which is a form of paralysis affecting the left side of her body. This means she can’t move her leg, arm, hand or toes, and she’s blind in her left eye.

Lyninger, who lives alone with her dog and cat, uses a manual wheelchair to get around her apartment complex, but perilous sidewalks don’t allow her to go much further. Before suffering from an aneurysm, Lyninger worked as an administrative assistant for the Eureka County Sheriff’s Office.

NNCIL’s Equipment Loan program provides used durable medical equipment to Northern Nevadans. People are asked to donate equipment and/or make monetary donations to NNCIL, so they can help even more Northern Nevadans.

NNCIL Independent Living Advocate Hentjie Apag delivered the chair to Lyninger.  “It’s incredibly gratifying being able to help people like Pam have some freedom,” Apag said. “It’s amazing what something as simple as a wheelchair can do.”

The Northern Nevada Center for Independent Living (NNCIL) was founded more than 30 years ago as a 501c3 by a small group of people with disabilities to help others with disabilities hone the skills they needed to achieve independent living.
