Eureka took their small stable of wrestlers to the Ely Lions tournament Dec. 20.

Coach Jeremy Auch said Sage Borda (106-113) won one match and lost two others. Ivan Pickard (126) was in his first competition as a high school wrestler and lost both of his matches. Quade Filippini went 2-1 at the tourney, losing the last match to a wrestler from Battle Mountain. Chris Drayton was also 2-1 and Preston Hubbard was 1-2 at the tourney.

Garrett Todd is still recovering from a broken nose and will not wrestle until after the new year and Wyatt Anderson was attending a family event out of state.

Overall, Auch said the wrestlers did good, “We just have to step up our game to compete with these guys.”

Even though Eureka is a 1A school in every other sport, they are listed as a 2A school for wrestling and do have to compete with the larger 2A schools.

The Vandals are off now until Jan. 4-5 and a tournament in Sparks.
