The Lady Vandals took their first loss in about a month, losing at league leader McDermitt 46-29 last week.
The state scoring leader in any classification, Precious Masters of McDermitt (25 ppg), was a factor in the Bulldogs wins over Eureka, but coach Travis Gallagher was somewhat pleased, “we kept her down to 15.” Jasmine Northrup had 13 for McDermitt.
The teams meet again in the regular season finale in Ely Feb. 15.
He said, “We struggled to scored against McDermitt that game, couldn’t get the good shots on the inside and they were pushing us way out away from the basket.
Gracie Garrett was high point for Eureka with 13 points. Angelica Townsend had eight.
“I felt good about the game. I feel confident we can put a better game against them in our next meeting,” Gallagher said. However, Eureka has lost three out of four times to McDermitt since last year.
The next day, at Oasis Academy it was a much different outcome, a big 42-16 win for the Vandals. Garrett led the way with 17 points. “She’s making better shot selection as we go along,” Gallagher said.
Subs played most of the second half.
The game was a walkover for Eureka as they had a 30-5 lead at halftime. “We put a press on in the first half. Oasis did not handle it well and we took advantage of that”
On tap this Friday and Saturday, Eureka (13-4, 3-1) has home games with Carlin and Owyhee. It’s the start of the second round of league games. Owyhee (8-7, 2-2) is just one game back of Eureka in third place at the moment.
The Lady Vandals won at Owyhee 60-47 Jan. 12. “We shot the ball well, that night and they did not,” Gallagher noted, “and you can’t always expect that.”
Both Eureka and Owyhee still have one more meeting with McDermitt before the playoffs.
The four-team boys and girls East-West regional playoffs, hosted by the West, will be held Feb.21-22 at Wooster and Hug High Schools in Reno.
At the same time, the South-Central League regional tournament will take place at Reed and Wooster High Schools.
The top two finalists, both boys and girls, will advance to the state tournament March 1-2 at The Orleans in Las Vegas.
