A Nebraska man is in custody following a late-night traffic accident on Interstate 80 that led to the discovery of a significant quantity of illegal narcotics and a federal warrant.
At approximately 11:20 p.m. on Jan. 31, the Eureka County Sheriff’s Office responded to a reported collision near mile marker 263. Dispatch reports indicated that an SUV had rear-ended a semi-truck. Upon arrival, deputies identified the driver of the SUV as Wayne Harms of Lincoln, Nebraska.
A routine records check revealed that Harms was wanted on a nationwide warrant issued by the United States Marshals Service. Authorities also confirmed that Harms is currently on supervised release following a prior conviction for bank robbery with force.
During a subsequent search of the scene, deputies discovered a stun gun and a backpack belonging to Harms containing approximately 1.89 pounds of methamphetamine and roughly one pound of marijuana. Additionally, drug paraphernalia was found in Harms’ possession.
Harms was taken into custody and faces multiple charges, including:
- Trafficking a Schedule I or II controlled substance
- Possession with intent to sell
- Possession of a controlled substance
- Possession of an electronic stun device by a prohibited person
- Possession of drug paraphernalia
- Arrest of a fugitive from justice
The Eureka County Sheriff’s Office is coordinating the ongoing investigation with the Nevada Division of Investigation (NDI) Tri-County Drug Enforcement Unit, the Elko Combined Narcotics Unit, and the U.S. Marshals Service. The Nevada State Police is handling the investigation into the traffic collision.
