William Bee Ririe released an informational graphic reminding the public to recognize February as Heart Health Month, providing detailed information about heart attacks and cardiac arrests, promoting community health knowledge and sharing tips on how to safely navigate each situation.
Cardiac arrest
Cardiac arrest is when the heart suddenly stops beating. This usually occurs due to an electrical problem within the heart. Cardiac arrest is a life-threatening situation and a patient may become unresponsive. When faced with this emergency situation, first, call 911. Then engage in CPR. If there’s an AED (automated external defibrillator) and someone is trained in its use, deploy the device ASAP.
Heart attack
When a heart attack occurs, blood is unable to reach a part of the heart, usually due to a blockage. Timing is critical in this medical emergency. Symptoms include severe chest pain, discomfort in other parts of the upper body, shortness of breath, cold sweats and feeling sick to the stomach. Individuals with diabetes, older adults and women symptoms may differ. If you suspect a heart attack, call the local emergency number immediately, as every minute counts.
