Eureka County High School sophomore Lian Allred overcame a first-round loss to finish fourth amongst in the 106-pound weight class of the NIAA 2A State Wrestling Championships at Winnemucca on Saturday, Feb. 14.
After being pinned by Ethan Rider in the first period of his first-round match, Allred crushed the consolation bracket with a 38-second pinfall and a 12-0 major decision to earn a rematch with Rider in the consolation final. Rider prevailed by pinfall once again, but Allred improved, scoring a point and forcing Rider to wrestle longer.
At 175 pounds, Preston Auch got a first-round win before dropping a pair of decisions, the last of which he led 9-6 going into the third period. Thomas Schweble, wrestling at 132 pounds, got a 38-second pinfall victory over Callen Free of Lincoln County.
The Vandals finished 12th in 2A out of 22 teams, just ahead of Beatty and two points behind Green Valley.
