Adoption event on tap for gathered horses

On March 7, the Bureau of Land Management is providing a unique opportunity to adopt 12 yearlings and weanlings that were gathered from the Fish Creek Herd Management Area before they are shipped to the Palomino Valley National Adoption Center.

This trap-site adoption event includes Curly horses. It is believed that these horses may be descendants of Curly horses brought into the United States to Eureka, Nevada, in the late 1800’s by Tom Dixon. The dominant color of wild horses found in the Fish Creek HMA is roan (blue, red, strawberry), with other colors present including palomino, buckskin, grulla, sorrel, gray, brown and bay.

The adoption event will begin at 10 a.m. and will be conducted through lottery drawing of all qualified applicants signed up for the event by 10 a.m. Once the lottery event is completed, unadopted wild horses will be available through 2 p.m. Sunday, March 8 on a first-come first-served basis.

All wild horses available for adoption have been vaccinated, dewormed and Coggins tested.

It is recommended that interested adopters submit a completed application to the Battle Mountain District prior to the event. Prior approval is not required, but is highly encouraged. The BLM Wildland Fire Station is located about 1 mile northwest of Eureka on Highway 50, next to the fairgrounds.

The Fish Creek Herd Management Area is located just a few miles south of Eureka, Nevada in the Antelope and Little Smokey Valleys and in the Antelope and Fish Creek Mountains.
