Anderson Wins Weight Class at Lovelock Tournament

December 28, 2017 by Dave Maxwell Leave a Comment

Wyatt Anderson won the 132 pound B weight class at the 25-team Mustang Invitational in Lovelock last week. He went 4-0 pining all his opponents.

Coach Jeremy Auch said in Anderson’s weight group, “There were 27 kids entered, and the tournament directors wanted to keep it to a 16-man bracket, so it was split into an A and B group.” However, the champions of each group did not wrestle each other.

Anderson had a bye his first match and moved into the quarterfinals against Colton Wanner of Pershing County and won by pin at 2:24 in the second period, then won over Joaquin Arevelo in the semifinal at 4:44 of the third period and in the finals pinned Brady Masset of Spanish Springs at 4:22 of the third period.

Ashton Sanders (123) had a bye his first match, but lost by a pin to Michael Malone of Battle Mountain in the second period. This moved him to the consolation rounds where he first had a bye, then lost by pin to Lance Dove of Lowry.

At 138 pounds, the Vandals Garrett Todd won his first match by pin over Emilio Gomez of Pershing County, then lost a quarterfinal match on a third period pin to Bryan Day of Lowry. Auch said, “The match was 2-1 going into the second period, but Day is so good on the top, he controlled the match thereafter.”

In the consolation bracket, Todd won two matches, both by pin over Jose Andrade and Shane Hertwig, both from Spanish Springs. But in the consolation semifinal he lost to Avery Aranas of Sparks by major decision.

“All the boys did good,” Auch said. “Their confidence level was a lot better.”

On Thursday this week, the Vandals participated in the Ely Lions tournament with White Pine, Lincoln County and Pahranagat Valley.
