Basketball teams finish busy week

Lady Vandals sweep road trip

Off to one of the stronger starts in school history, the Eureka County High girls basketball team continued their dominance last week with a pair of road wins.

The Lady Vandals were without leading scorer Natalie Norcutt on the two day trip, but the rest of the team stepped up in her absence.

Taylor Usry scored a team high 13 points and  had 13 rebounds in the Lady Vandals 50-27 win over Wells on Jan. 18. Megan Damele wasn’t far behind with 12, while Shara Green finished with 8.

The Lady Vandals were back at it the next day when they routed Jackpot 54-14.

Usry led the way for the second game in a row for Eureka with 15 points, and Damele poured in 13.

Following the two conference wins, the Eureka girls briefly stepped out of conference on Jan. 21, suffering its second loss of the season against Division III White Pine High.

The Lady Vandals (15-2, 4-0) take on Tonopah at home on Jan. 23 and travel to McDermitt on Jan. 24.

Boys fall at Wells, pick up win at Jackpot

The Eureka County High boys basketball team suffered its second consecutive loss last week, falling at Wells 56-47. Trevor Merritt led the way for the Vandals with 15 points, and Garrett Johnson had 10.

Eureka was able to split the two game road trip, however, after downing Jackpot 71-39 on Jan. 19.

Nick Hornberger finished with 17 points against the Jaguars, while Merritt poured in 9. Clancy Talbot also scored 8 in the win.

The Vandals weren’t able to keep the momentum going this week when they lost a non-conference game to visiting White Pine 69-53. Merritt scored 16 points in the loss.

Eureka (6-11, 2-2) plays at home against Tonopah on Jan. 23 before hitting the road against McDermitt the following day.
