In an additional meeting pursuant to law on Oct. 31, the Board of Eureka County Commissioners designated Miles Umina as interim sheriff of Eureka County, effective Nov. 1.
Umina began his law enforcement career in 2005 and served as a lieutenant for the Eureka County Sheriff’s Office.
The move comes as the commissioners unanimously agreed to accept the resignation of Jesse J. Watts from the elected position of county sheriff, effective April 1, 2025. Watts will remain on leave with pay and all benefits beginning Nov. 1 until April 1. He will simultaneously relinquish his authority of office, which will then be considered a vacancy. Rich McKay, commissioner chairman, said, “From my perspective, it is more fiscally responsible to pay the sheriff through the end of March rather than go through a very expensive and potentially problematic recall election.”
This was in response to questions the commissioners have received regarding the payout and resignation date of Watts.
Umina will perform the duties of sheriff until the office can be filled by appointment or an election.
