Conservation District to hold annual awards dinner

October 25, 2013 by Lukas Eggen Leave a Comment

The Eureka Conservation District will hold its annual awards dinner and meeting on Oct. 24 at 6 p.m. The dinner recognizes community members for their excellecence in conservation. There will also be awards given out to the poster contest winners, with the members meeting to follow. The cost for the dinner is $15. To RSVP, please call Jan Self at 775-237-5091 or Chairwoman Patsy Tomera at 775-754-2333.

“The district coordinates technical and educational resources to meet the needs of the people within the district for conservation of natural resources.”

The district works on a number of projects within Eureka County, Tomera said.

“We have a Pinyon/Juniper thinning project with a rancher in Eureka County, riparian improvement projects, agriment station maintenance and study, center pivot management monitoring and weed spraying are just a few of the things we do,” Tomera said.

The conservation district also works with children by supporting the Range Camp, scholarships for high school and college students and the Duck Stamp program for the Juvenile Department. The poster contest is aimed at students in all grade levels. The theme changes each year and winners are chosen in each grade.

“This year (the theme is) Where Does Your Water Shed,” Tomera said. “The schools work with us and we provide the material regarding the subject. Winners are chosen by the artwork the kids do. We give first, second and third place in all grade levels and each place wins money and a ribbon.”

During the dinner and meeting awards will also be handed out to community members for their work and improvements in conservation methods.

“Awards are given for conservation improvements on private lands, support of the conservation district and outstanding participation in conservation programs,” Tomera said.

As the Eureka Conservation District celebrates its annual awards dinner, the district’s impacts aren’t just limited to Eureka County.

“The district also assists the Natural Resource Conservation Service to carry out conservation programs,” Tomera said. “It also participates in public and legislative meetings concerning the conservation district and works with the local cooperative extension service.”

Eureka Conservation District meetings are held monthly, with times varying from the summer months to the winter months. All meetings are open to the public. For more information, please contact Tomera or Self.

“Meetings are held each month,” Tomera said. “State meetings are once a year and the National meeting is also once a year. The meetings are open to the public. During the summer meetings are at 10 a.m. and during the winter meetings are held at 1 p.m.”
