The Crescent Valley Town Advisory Board met March 5.
Medical services
Laura Shivers, who is also a member of the Crescent Valley Medical Services Committee, related they will be having a closed meeting March 11. She read the letter CVMSAC Chairwoman Kimberly Sewell shared at the county commission meeting.
Sheriff’s Office
Deputy William Hoggard gave the Sheriff’s Office update. “We’re still tripping along. We’re still here.” Asked by Shivers for a potential target date for new officers, Hoggard said, “The biggest thing is the background portion. They all have to pass.”
Vice Chair Rice said it was explained to him new hires will still have to go to POST.
Deputy Hoggard explained POST holds an academy in January and July, so new hires may be able to go in July. Hoggard said higher powers would make the decision as to “bring them on earlier and have them get some on the job experience before they go. That has been a little bit of our past practice of bringing them on about a month or so before they go, so they get an idea of what they’re getting into.”
Rice reported there will be some upcoming EMS trainings.
Crescent Valley Fun Days
The board turned to the budget for the June 21 Crescent Valley Fun Days, including $1,200 for food, $400 for games and prizes, $300 for miscellaneous, $200 for paper products, $1,000 for raffles and prizes and $300 for contract people. Tracy Moylan volunteered to oversee the games.
The board accepted a $3,650 budget for the Fun Days.
County Commission updates
Commissioner Mike Schoenwald gave the county commission update, highlighting the upcoming public interview for the appointment of the sheriff.
Nona Kellerman asked whether Acting Sheriff Miles Umina had put in for the position, and Schoenwald said Umina had put in a letter of interest.
He also noted that the $3,000 scholarship approved for Eureka County High School students also applies to kids in Crescent Valley who are attending Battle Mountain. Homeschool students are also eligible.
Kellerman asked how to make families aware of the opportunity.
Schoenwald suggested contacting guidance counselor Jaylene Callister and commented, “I know the scholarship is [available] to any Eureka resident of high school age.”
Healthy Paws
Schoenwald mentioned the $5,000 donation to Healthy Paws of Eureka, which assists in spaying and neutering of cats and dogs. With the death of Barbara Dugan, he asked who would assist Cindy Beutel with the program and requested, “If you know of anybody who would be interested in that, please pass them along.”
Cameras in the park
Schoenwald commented on the issue of cameras in the park. In preparation for exercise equipment installation, they are going to put in sand rather than trying to work around the grass.
Mormon crickets
Concern about the upcoming Mormon cricket season was discussed, and Schoenwald said the cost of spraying the crickets has been cut back considerably.
Elko Health and Fitness Fair
Nick Hirschi, APRN, of the Crescent Valley Medical Clinic said there will be a Health and Fitness Fair in Elko on March 22, which will be offering free labs. The senior center will be taking people. Hirschi will have a booth and do a raffle.
