On Tuesday, July 30 at 1 p.m., some 40 people came out to enjoy a ribbon cutting and dedication as the USPS, Sam Bharta and the community of Crescent Valley celebrated the opening of a Village Post Office at Sam’s Corner Store.

The event was made complete with balloons, soda, a special cake made by Jennifer Sharkozy, daughter-in-law of County Commissioner Mike Sharkozy, and pizza courtesy of Sam’s Store.

“It’s the first Village Post Office in the Nevada district so we’re very proud of that. They can sell stamps and any flat rate boxes and envelopes they can sell here now and the mail gets picked up every day from inside the store and the box except Sunday,” said Shawna Eklund of Carlin’s USPS.

With the store full of celebrants, Bharta, owner of Sam’s Store, said he put in the Village Post Office because “it’s what the public needs.”

Jerry DePaoli of the USPS operations said, “This is great. This is our first one in the District. It’s a whole new element to the postal service. It’s a way we can get postal services to areas like this where we normally wouldn’t have them. So, it’s wonderful for us and hopefully it’ll be good for him, too; bring in some extra revenue.”

While mail in Crescent Valley is now delivered to USPS postal boxes at the Town fair grounds, with the opening of the Village Post Office at Sam’s, the only store in the small town, once again additional postal services are available to the small rural community.
