On May 21 at 6 p.m., the youth of the Crescent Valley Elementary School, under the direction of Aneesa Ashcroft, performed the Crescent Valley Spring Concert/Talent Show at the school to the delight of guests.

The show began with a moving rendition of ‘The Rainbow Connection’ by the full school chorus and then Mary Janet Enriquez’s talents were highlighted in ‘Carry On’ followed by young violinist Ryan Fontes’ ‘Twinkle Twinkle Little Star’. The full school chorus returned to charm with the Beatles’ ‘Yellow Submarine.’ Then, brothers Stephen and John-David Enriquez performed ‘On Top of the World.’ Led by Preschool/Kindergarten teacher, Trudy Petroff, the little ones donned chicken beak masks and in synchronized choreography to the delight of all performed the ‘Chicken Dance.’ The full chorus returned for the uplifting ‘Let It Go’ from the Disney film, Frozen, with the film playing dramatically behind the singers; followed by a rendition of ‘Radioactive’ by the Enriquez brothers. Teacher Trudy Petroff joined by husband, Anthony, delivered a precise and elegant ballroom dancing piece worthy of ‘Dancing with the Stars’ to ‘I Need to Know.’ Under-sheriff Keith Logan with guitar in hand then took to the stage for a singing and comedy act and led those assembled in singing ‘happy birthday’ to Deputy Marcial Evertsen and his wife. Another violin solo of ‘Home on the Range’ was performed by Nathan Fontes before the full chorus looked to the future in ‘I Have a Dream.’ Beautiful Kimber Bowser then did a spirited solo ribbon dance to ‘Circle of Life’ followed by the full chorus singing ‘Mama’ in honor of all the mothers. Clara Creedon and Britney Davids together performed Disney’s ‘Part of Your World’ from ‘The Little Mermaid’ and then school staff including Sandy Spoo-Fernandez, Patty Zander, Aneesa Ashcroft, Nancy Foster, and Karen DeYoung burst on the scene manned-up to do a hilarious, energetic rendition of ‘Y.M.C.A.’ led by Trudy Petroff in cowboy regalia complete with mustache. The show closed on a high note with the full school chorus belting out Weird Al Yankovich’s ‘Eat It,’ parody of Michael Jackson’s ‘Beat It.’

The school fun continued the next day as all the children, parent chaperones and staff were treated to a mine tour of the Cortez Gold Mine led by Melanie Lawson of Barrick Gold which entailed the school children and associated adults piling into a Coach U.S.A. bus and riding to the gold mine south of Crescent Valley to see the big pit, watch a movie on mining and try on mine gear before riding back to the school on one of the same buses some of their parents ride to work every day.
