Dr. Carl M. Herrera,

Dr. Carl M. Herrera, DDS, was born in Eureka, Nevada on November 25, 1932 to loving parents, Rose Tognoni and Ciriaco “Paco” Herrera. He departed his earthly being into the loving arms of our Savior, Jesus Christ, on October 17, 2018, at Renown South Meadows in Reno, Nevada surrounded by loving and heart broken family and friends.

Carl was one of six children. Carl received his elementary and high school education while living in Eureka, Nevada. He was a very proud alumni of ECHS and returned annually with his parents to attend the annual celebration of which he was always honored to give the invocation. Carl graduated in 1950 as Valedictorian of his class. While in high school Carl held many class, student body and organization offices. He played football and basketball and was exceptionally proud to have been on the 1949-50 State Basketball championship team hailing from Eureka.

After graduating from ECHS, Carl attended the University of Nevada, Reno and the University of Southern California Dental School on a Harold’s Club Scholarship. Carl graduated from dental school in 1956. Carl was married to Marcia Albers. They had four children. Carl proudly served as a Captain in the United States Air Force. Upon discharge from the Air Force, he returned to Reno where he practiced, very successfully dentistry for 43 years.

He was an active member of many service and professional oganizations including; Elks Club, Rotary Club, Sierra Club, Prospectors Club, and CAIC. Carl served as President of the Nevada Dental Association, Nevada State Board of Dental Examiners, and the American Academy of Restorative Dentistry. He loved his native Nevada, and was an avid outdoorsman, hunting and fishing with his family at every opportunity. He was a devout member of Our Lady of Snows Catholic Parish and was remarkably strong in his faith.

Carl was preceded in death by his parents, “Paco” and Rose, his brothers, Ted, Maynard and Robert and his sisters, Elaine Jaureguito and Bernadine “Beni” Fein. He is survived by his children; Dr. Michael Herrera, Dr. Carla Herrera, Dr. Anthony Herrera and Marcelle (Thomas) Herrera; his gandchildren; Kayla Herrera, Zachary (Hailey) Turner, Kassandra Herrera, and Carly Turner, his great-grandchildren; Braden and Mila Turner.

Dr. Carl Herrera came from humble beginnings in rural Nevada and worked tirelessly to become a successful and caring professional, and to cultivate strong relationships with everyone he met. He lived his entire life with passion, dedication and true devotion to God and others. Nevada has indeed lost a beloved native son. He will be forever and deeply missed.

Rosary and viewing were held at Walton’s Funeral Home (875 W. 2nd Street, Reno, NV) on Friday, October 26. Mass of the Ressurection funeral service was held Saturday, October 27 at Our Lady of Snows Catholic Church (1138 Wright Street, Reno, NV) A Celebration of Life reception immediately followed. Carl was laid to rest Monday, October 29 at Our Lady of Sorrows Mousoleum on N. Virginia Street, Reno, Nevada next to his beloved parents and brother Maynard.
