Echs Baseball Team Finishes Season on High Note

Both the Eureka boys baseball and girls softball teams concluded their seasons this past week, but both will not make the playoffs this year.

The Vandal baseball team did end on the upswing though, taking two wins over Carlin, a 15-4 win on Tuesday, then a 20-11 win over the Railroaders on Friday.

The Vandals finished the season at 6-10.

In the Friday game, both teams matched each other with six runs apiece in the first inning.

But the Vandals really went to work in the second inning. Zac Garcia’s single scored two runs, an error by Carlin scored two more, Bryson Wells hit a two-run single, and another error by the Railroaders scored two more.

Gage Howard and Chris Dolan were the first two pitchers for Eureka but got into trouble quickly, and Wells came on in relief mid-way through the second inning. He went the rest of the way, giving up two runs on four hits. But he struck out 15 batters and walked four.

The Vandals had 12 hits on the day. Wells and Lacovara both had three hits and the team had 18 stolen bases. C.W. Landry had the most with six.

The earlier game on Tuesday, a 15-4 Eureka win, saw Mikell Lacovara deliver four hits to power the victory.

He doubled in the first and third innings, belted a three-run homer and a single in the fourth inning when the Vandals had another 10-run inning.

Shane Lacovara, Carlin Hooper, Chance Trindle and Bryson Wells also drove in runs in the frame.

S. Lacovara had the most work of three Eureka pitchers that game. He pitched three inning, no runs on one hit, struck out four and walked two.

The Vandals banged out 19 hits in getting their 15 runs. Right behind Lacovara was Hooper with three RBIs.

Eureka is now 7-of-10 in the series with the Railroaders since the 2014 season.

However, it will be Wells and Mineral County that represent the league in the 1A Northern Regional tournament this Friday and Saturday in Wells.

The tournament schedule has Wells (12-7) against Sierra Lutheran (16-4) and Mineral County (16-7) facing Virginia City (13-3).

The championship is Saturday at 12:30. The two finalists advance to the 1A state tournament May 17-19 at North Valleys High in Reno.

Pahranagat Valley (16-4) is the two-time defending state champion.
