Eunice Maria Machacek

Eunice passed away Nov. 26, 2015 quietly at Highland Manor in Elko after a long illness.

She was born at Buhl, Idaho to John Jr. and Caroline Reinke Meyer on Oct. 25, 1922.  She was a lifelong Lutheran belonging to the St Johns’ Lutheran Church in Buhl and St. Marks’ Lutheran Church in Elko, NV.

She attended and graduated from the Buhl School system after that she went to work at Bean Growers Warehouse in Filer, ID and then went to work for the MH King Company’s 5 & 10 Cent Store in Buhl where she was assistant manager.

In July 1943 she married LaVerne D. Machacek and they had a son Jerry L. Machacek. When LaVerne returned from the Army in 1945 she and her husband went back to their farm.  Along with the farming and a custom farming business they also managed the airport at Buhl, where LaVerne, a licensed flight instructor, had 30 students.

Mrs. Machacek was her husbands’ constant companion in everything they did, even hand propping the small trainer planes that didn’t have electric starters. She was also a substitute rural mail carrier for 9 years.

Starting in 1958 she, LaVerne and son Jerry moved to Diamond Valley at Eureka to start a Desert Land Entry farm. She was truly a pioneer at heart and operated all of the farm equipment on their alfalfa farm, which she thoroughly enjoyed.

During her life she was on the Board of Directors of the Eureka Senior Center and was also on the B.O.D. of the woman’s division of the REA while her husband was on the original B.O.D. of Mt. Wheeler Power Company.

She was honored by the Soil Conservation for the work, along with her husband and son, for developing the irrigation system from the mountain creeks to their farm, being the first woman  awarded this in Nevada.

Everyone who knew her will always remember her lovely smile.

Her husband and her were members of the Sagebrush Spinners Square Dance Club in Elko and traveled all over the West dancing.

She is survived by son Jerry, daughter-in-law Trina (Russell) and two sisters Vickie, of Buhl Idaho and Atie of Apple Valley CA, and numerous nieces and nephews.  She was preceded in death by her husband LaVerne in 1988, her parents, six sisters and 3 brothers.

No Services will be held at her request.  Donations can be sent to Gideon’s International, Elko Camp, P.O. Box 1717, Elko, NV  89803 in her memory.

Thank you to wonderful staff at Highland Manor for the loving care she received during her stay there
