Eureka 6-0 after dropping McDermitt

Eureka County High School and their varsity football team had their first home game in over a month at Crutchley Field last Friday and cruised to a 54-0 win. The Vandals continued their dominance on the football field against a struggling McDermitt Bulldog team that barely suited up enough players to have a game.

The starters for the Vandals only played the first three series of the game as the younger players took the field for the remainder of the contest. Eureka coach Fred Minoletti did the commendable thing and allowed his underclassmen to play and gain some experience while not running up the score to an embarrassing level.

Garrett Todd of the Vandals rushed for 88 yards and a touchdown while CW Bice had two rushing touchdowns and a 55 yard punt return touchdown.

Defensively, Gavin Denshire had a nice game with 2.5 tackles for losses from the linebacker position.

When asked about the home win, Minoletti said, “We liked that the younger kids kept the intensity and determination strong throughout the game and were able to hold McDermitt scoreless.”

The win put Eureka’s overall record to 6-0 on the season and 3-0 in league. They sit atop their division with one more remaining league game to play.

Statewide, the Vandals are ranked fourth and seemed poised for a deep playoff push.

The Vandals will play their homecoming game this Friday at 5 p.m. against North Tahoe.
