The Lady Vandals earned homecourt advantage throughout the 1A East Regional Volleyball Playoffs with a straight-set win over Wells in Eureka on Friday, Oct. 24. The victory assured the Vandals (9-8, 9-1) would hold off second-seeded Lund Mustangs (20-9, 8-2), who defeated Wells a day prior, albeit in five sets.
The Vandals took set one comfortably, 25-18, but Wells nearly stole the second, 25-23. Eureka then refound its form with a third-set drubbing, 25-15.
Brooke Watts had 11 kills, and June Callister had nine. Anna McKay had 36 assists. Jazmine Martinez had 15 digs, Watts added 11 and Keilailee Perkins had 10.
Eureka will host the winner of fourth-seeded Wells and fifth-seeded McDermitt at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 1. The winner qualifies for state and plays for the regional title at 3 p.m. that same day.
When asked how the team’s vibes are headed into the playoffs, EHS head coach Kati Benson said, “The team is very supportive of one another. I hope they continue to have positive, high energy for the games.” As far as preparing for Wells and McDermitt, “We are doing lots of live defense for playing both teams,” she added. “It’s always nice to play at home, but best for volleyball is to have a nice, high ceiling and lots of space to chase down a ball.”
Wells and McDermitt kickoff the regional playoffs at 10 a.m. on Saturday in Eureka.
