The Eureka High School football team overcame injuries and illness to win its first game of the season, beating the McDermitt Bulldogs in a 48-0 rout on Saturday, Sept. 19.
“It did feel good to get the first win of the season. We were down to 11 players due to injuries and illness, so we didn’t really know what to expect on Saturday,” Eureka head coach Fred Minoletti said. “We played better defensively as a unit and saw improvement in discipline and tackling so that was good.”
Minoletti added that he was proud of how the team responded after the “Carlin beatdown” last week – a 44-6 loss at home. But the Vandals were missing a key contributor on both sides of the ball in that game.
“Dean Benson had a really good game on offense and defense…having his leadership back on the field helped tremendously,” Minoletti said.
The Vandals have a huge game at Wells (2-3, 2-1) on Thursday, Sept. 25, at 7 p.m. They hope to get a few more starters back for that game as well.
“If we can pull off a win Thursday, it would be great momentum heading into the second half of our season,” Minoletti said.
