Josie Hoekenga drove in four runs in a 22-19 loss to Mineral County last week.

A walk in the eighth inning left the Eureka girls softball team on the wrong end of a 12-11 loss at Mineral County last week in the first game of their league double-header in Hawthorne.

The score was tied at 11 when Julieanna Williams drew a walk that scored Perla Gutierrez with the winning score.

The Vandals had trailed 11-6 in the bottom of the sixth inning, but fought back with five runs in the top of the seventh. They got back-to-back doubles with two outs. Mikala Talbot had a two run double followed by another double by Savanna Sanders that scored Talbot.

Mineral County scored in bunches, three times in each the first, fourth and fifth innings, highlighted by a two-run home run by Hailey Lahre.

Williams earned the win for the Serpents. She gave up 14 hits and nine runs over eight innings, struck out nine and walked seven.

Jenesis Dominguez started on the mound for Eureka. She went four and two-thirds innings, allowed eight runs on nine hits, struck out two and walked five.

Sanders came on in relief in the fifth inning, went two and two-thirds innings, allowing three hits and two runs while striking out two.

The Lady Vandals collected 14 hits in the game. Talbot, Dominguez, Sanders, Cammie Skinner and Shauna Brown managed multiple hits. Talbot was 3-for-4 at the plate. The girls did not commit and error.

Lahre led Mineral County at bat going 4-for-4.

The second game was a walk-in-the-park, literally, for both teams. A total of 35 walks were issued, 17 by Eureka and 18 by Mineral County.

Despite this, Eureka’s Josie Hoekenga delivered four runs, but the Vandals could not hold up against a 17-hit attack by the Serpents and lost 22-19.

Hoekenga drove in runs with a walk in the first inning, a single in the third and a double in the sixth.

Despite the loss, the Vandals girls did collect 10 hits.

Both teams scored heavily in the high-scoring affair. Eureka got four in the first inning, only to have the Serpents came back with a 10-run inning.

Eureka scored five times in both the second and third innings for a 14-12 lead. But Mineral County got the lead back with six runs in their half of the inning.

Jerzi Moody-Isom earned the victory for Mineral County on the mound. She took over for Williams who had pitched four innings. She had allowed nine runs on six hits, had three strikeouts and walked eight. Isom didn’t do much better though, she walked 10 batters.

Williams was also 5-for-7 at the plate for Mineral County. That ties her for second place with six other players in the NIAA record book, including Mineral County’s Tana Gurule (2001) and Hailey Lahre (2016).

The state record for hits in a single game, all classes, is six by Michelle Palaroan, Reed, 1991.

This week the Lady Vandals are off and do not play again until April 10 hosting Round Mountain. On April 13, they host Pyramid Lake in a league double-header.
