April 28, 2019 by Dave Maxwell Leave a Comment

The Lady Vandals Mikala Talbot spun a 16-0 shutout at the Round Mountain Knights on Tuesday this week.

Bree Hooper helped out by driving in six runs. She was 3-for-4 at the plate. Hooper drove in runs on a single in the first inning, a single in the second and followed up with a grand slam home run in the third.

Eureka put six runs on the board in the first inning. Shauna Brown was hit by a pitch and Samantha Sanders drew a walk. Then a two-out single by Hooper drove in one run, Sanders stole home for a second run, a double steal with Hooper stealing home added another run, and a single by Jamie Protani and a third steal of home plate brought in more runs.

Talbot earned the win for Eureka. She allowed no runs on four hits, struck out five and walked six.

Breylee Harwood took the loss for Round Mountain. She gave up six runs on four hits, had two strikeouts and walked two. Other pitchers gave up 10 more runs on nine more hits, but their stats were not posted on Gamechanger.com.

Hooper’s grand slam home run in the third inning came after Brown, Josie Hoekenga and Sanders had all got on base. She sent a 1-0 count to the left field fence.

Eureka totaled 13 hits in the game. Hooper, Protani and Sanders each hit multiple hits.

Sanders had four stolen bases for the Lady Vandals. In total, the team had 17 stolen bases.

Harwood had two hits for Round Mountain.

This weekend, Friday and Saturday, the Vandal girls have a home game with Oasis Academy Friday and travel to Wells on Saturday.

The Vandals will play Wells again April 27 in Eureka, then close out the regular season with a three-game set at Carlin May. 1.

The 1A Northern Region playoffs will be held May 10-11 in Virginia City. The state tournament will be May 16-18 at Moapa Valley High School in Overton.
