Filippini Leads Vandal Wrestlers at Lovelock Meet

Eureka took part Dec. 7-8 in their first wrestling tournament of the season, the Cody Louk Invitational at Pershing County High School in Lovelock.

Freshman Sage Borda (113), the only girl on the Vandals team, lost both her matches.

“She really needs to drop down to 106 in our next matches,” said coach Jeremy Auch.

Borda lost by fall to Ezekiel Jackson of Pershing County, received a bye in consolation Round 1, but lost by fall in Round 2 to Adrian Ruscetta of North Valley.

Another freshman for the Vandals, James Filippini (132) did very well for the team, earning 20 points with his fourth place finish.

His first match was a bye. Then he pinned Christian Harshberger of Wooster at 4:22 in the third period.

But he lost by fall in the medal round quarterfinals to Dallin Gresko of Spanish Springs.

He won two consolation round matches, each by fall, over Stephen

Perez of Spanish Springs and Bryce Tucker of Battle Mountain.

In the consolation semifinals, Filippini took a 5-1 decision over Spencer Mitchel of Damonte Ranch. But in the third place match, he lost again by fall to Dallin Gresko.

Wyatt Anderson (138) won two matches and lost two at Pershing County.

He received a bye in the first round and won by fall in his next match with Brady Massett of Spanish Springs.

In the championship quarterfinals though, he lost by pin to Cory Sego of Spanish Springs.

Moving to the consolation rounds, he won by fall over Colton Wanner of Pershing County, but lost his next match on an 8-1 decision to Kyle Jones of Fernley.

Preston Hubbard (152) for Eureka begin with a bye in Round 1.

In his first match he lost by fall to Izayah Pando of Carson. But in consolation Round 2, he received a bye to meet Thomas Leggot of Carson in Round 3 and beat him by pin at 1:57 of the first period.

Hubbard, however, lost in Round 4 on a 7-4 decision to Isaiah McLain of North Valley.

Finally, Chris Drayton (160) won his first match over Dalton Shake of Battle Mountain by fall.

But he lost his next two matches, by fall to Justin Barnes of Yerington, and a 3-2 decision to Colton Williams of Wooster.

Coach Auch said “the Cody Louk is a tough tournament, a bunch of 4A and 3A kids. It taught our kids they need to learn to wrestle three rounds, take your opponent into the third period, you aren’t going to pin everyone. However, that is where “Quaid” (Filippini) is good at. He goes three rounds with most anyone.”

This week the Vandals are at the Mustang Invitational, again in Lovelock at Pershing County High School. On Dec. 20, they participate in the Ely Lions tournament at White Pine High School.
