Frank West

Frank West Abercrombie, 82, passed away suddenly on January 29, 2017 in Eureka, Nevada. Frank was born in Las Vegas, Nevada to Henry and Nelle Abercrombie on December 28, 1934, the tenth of eleven children. He attended the old Fifth Street Grammar School and graduated from Las Vegas High School in 1953. He was a member of the Naval Reserve and the National Guard. In his youth he was very active in the local racing community. He built and raced some of the first sand rails at the old drag strip behind the then Silver Slipper Casino. He had a love of motorcycles, trucks, and antique cars. He was a hardworking man who looked after many others in rural Nevada where he retired in 1997 after he tired of the hustle and bustle of Las Vegas. Frank loved the slow going pace and close knit community of Eureka but traveled frequently to visit family and loved ones in Las Vegas. Frank was a member of the Teamsters and was a consummate handy-man. He had also worked for Nevada Power and Home Lumber Company for many years and continued working part-time after he retired for the city of Eureka and for many individuals in his community, caring for them and their properties. Frank will always be remembered for his easy smile, his love of corny jokes and his affinity for stray cats, dogs and other animals.

Frank loved music and played the piano for several churches, including the Diamond Valley Baptist Church, where he attended faithfully for many years. He played the trombone in the Las Vegas High School Band and in years past also played the guitar and mandolin. Music was always a big part of his life and if there was a piano nearby, you would always find Frank playing it.

Frank is survived by two daughters, Sherri L. Strickland of Dayton, TX and Christy C. Abercrombie of Las Vegas, two grandsons, Jesse Villas of Las Vegas, and Bobby Villas of Corpus Cristi, TX, his sister, A. Dianne (John) Oliver (Brian, Jill, Kimberly), sister in law Mary Abercrombie of Las Vegas and many nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews and great great nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; Henry and Nelle Abercrombie, his brothers; Zack, Doyle, Clyde, Jack, Bill, Ray and sisters; Nanny C. Haygood, Beth Potter, and Mary.

A graveside ceremony will be held at the family plot Woodlawn Cemetery, 1500 Las Vegas Blvd N. Las Vegas, NV on February 10, 2017 at 2:30 p.m. A memorial will be held in Eureka, NV at a later date. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the Eureka County Senior Center at 20 W. Gold Street Eureka, Nevada 89316 or a donation to an animal charity of your choice in his name.
