Lady Vandals Avenge Earlier Loss to Wells

October 23, 2014 by Clint Tognotti Leave a Comment

ladyvandalsThe varsity volleyball team for Eureka County High School traveled to Wells this past Friday with avenging their only league loss weighing heavily on their mind.

Wells beat Eureka earlier this season in each team’s first league match. The Lady Vandals knew with a win in the rematch, they could overtake 1st place in league.

With Eureka leading the first set against Wells 6-4, Annette Hayward entered the game and served 9 straight point for the Lady Vandals as she helped lengthen the lead to 15-4. Wells wasn’t able to recover from the large deficit and Eureka took the first game by a score of 25-15.

Wells came storming back in the second set with a strong serving performance by Brenda Romero who capped the win with 6 straight serves to tie the match at one apiece.

Eureka ended the service streak from the Lady Leopards in the 3rd set. The Lady Vandals regained the lead with a 25-22 set win to go up by two sets to one.

The fourth and final set of the match against Wells was a closely fought game. With Wells up 6-2, Ashlee Kenzenberg served three straight points for Eureka closing the deficit to 5-6. The Lady Vandals then rallied behind a strong kill from Bridgette Bacon and began to pull away. A strong serving showcase from Elsie Etchegaray helped Eureka win the set which gave them the all important match win against Wells.

Coach Sherri Wilker was thrilled by her team’s performance saying, “This was a sweet win for us, as we avenged our only league loss of the season thus far.” She went on to explain her team’s victory over Wells by saying, “Getting hit at by 6 different hitters seemed too much for Wells to handle.”

Eureka also played league opponent Jackpot on Saturday also. Eureka won both matches of the double-header against the Lady Jaguars. A highlight of the matches against Jackpot was a 20 point serving performance including 10 aces by Eureka’s Beth Damele in one of the set wins.

With the two big wins for Eureka over the weekend, the Lady Vandals are at the top of the division. Wells has two league losses while Eureka and fellow league opponent Owhyee have only 1 league loss each. Eureka will travel to Owhyee this weekend to play a double header that might very well decide the top seed out of their league for regional playoffs.

The Lady Vandals are on quite a hot streak and hope to continue their impressive play. If they can win this weekend in Owhyee, they will be sitting pretty come playoff time.
