Lady Vandals drop doubleheader

Breeanna Hooper scores a run for Eureka in a recent game. The Vandals played Carlin on Tuesday and play the White Pine JV team on Saturday.

Losing a pair of games to Mineral County last week was somewhat disappointing because of the good progress the team has been making of late, said coach Briana Brown, especially the second one.

“We had a 7-6 lead in that one, but they got some good hits and ended up beating us. That was our best game so far. The girls continue to do well and improve, putting the pieces together and play as a team.”

Brown said, “Our bats were a little slow in the first game, although we did make some good plays.”

In the first game, Mineral County put six runs on the board in the top of the third inning and four more in the seventh, to emerge with a 16-4 win.

The Lady Vandals were able to score three in the bottom of the fifth, but not much more at other times.

In the second game, as Brown said, Eureka led 7-6 in the top of the fourth, when the Serpents showed their strength getting three runs, then piling on nine runs in the top of the fifth inning for an 18-8 win.

The Vandal girls played a game with Carlin on Tuesday and play the White Pine JV team on Saturday.

Mineral County leads the 1A Northern Division (14-4, 4-0) with Wells, Coleville and Whittell the likely other entrants into the regional playoffs at Smith Valley May 12-13.

Four-time defending state champion Pahranagat Valley (15-3, 2-0) leads the Southern Division with Round Mountain, Tonopah and Indian Springs likely contenders for a playoff berth.
