Lady Vandals drop Pyramid Lake in opener

September 4, 2015 by Clint Tognotti Leave a Comment

The volleyball team for Eureka County High School has been practicing the past several weeks to prepare for the 2015 season which they kicked off last Friday against Pyramid Lake.

Eureka, under head coach Kati Benson and assistant coach Elany Mentaberry, had their team primed and ready to go against Pyramid lake in their first action of the season. The Lady Vandals played two best of three matches against the Lady Lakers.

Eureka took the first game in only two matches 26-24 and 25-23.

The second game was quick work as well for Eureka as they again needed only two matches to win with scores of 25-18 and 25-22 to sweep the two games from Pyramid Lake.

The Lady Vandals started the 2015 season with a dominant performance as they didn’t lose a match against Pyramid Lake.

Defensively Ally Protani and Alia Minoletti “did a great job for us,” according to Benson. Senior Annette Hayward had her hands full as she was the only setter able to play, but did a great job for Eureka. Elsie Etchegaray and Sheradyn Slaybaugh “both had good matches at the net for us,” added Benson.

Benson was pleased with the opening performance from her team and said, “I am looking forward to having a great year with a fun, hard working, enthusiastic group of young women.”

Eureka will try and continue their early success this Thursday against Round Mountain at home starting at 5 p.m. in the Fieldhouse. They will follow that up with a tournament in Battle Mountain on the 4th and 5th of September.
