Lady Vandals Fall at Wells

The Lady Vandals had just one game last week, a 44-35 loss at Wells.

Coach Travis Gallagher said, “It’s always tough playing in Wells. I knew their team was going to be pretty good.”

Wells is in third place in the league right now, but still have play league leader McDermitt and Eureka a second time.

“We matched up to the Leopards well, I thought” he said. “It was close all the way through, going down to the last three minutes.”

Gallagher explained with 2:20 remaining it was still a two-point game. “But we made a couple of defensive mistakes, allowed a couple of easy baskets,so then we had to go to the foul game.”

But that strategy did not work very well as each of the six times freshman Cameron Powers was fouled, she connected on each one. She finished the game with 20 points. Sammi Stumpf scored 16 points. Gracie Garrett had 12 points for Eureka and Morgan Thomas had 10. But they and Cody Gibbs and Angelika Townsend were the only other Eureka players to score.

Wells outscored the Vandals 17-10 in the final period. Gallagher said, “Wells’ man to man defense got to us, frustrated us. They were playing to put pressure on the ball quite a ways out and we were having difficulty getting our offense going. Not a whole lot of open shots from the outside like what we’re used to. On both ends of the court, it was the defense by either team that was the key to the game.”

Today, Eureka (11-4, 2-1) plays at league leader McDermitt (13-2, 3-0) and their outstanding junior player Precious Masters, averaging 22 points a game. “She is triple threat, shooting, ball handling, and rebounding,” Gallagher said. “They beat Owyhee in Owyhee by 20 points last weekend.

Eureka only beat Owyhee in their first meeting by two points

The Vandal girls beat McDermitt in the last meeting in February last year, but had lost five of six prior to that.

On Saturday, the girls host Oasis Academy of Fallon (7-3). “It’s a pickup game since Jackpot cancelled the girls season,” Gallagher said. “A 2A independent, they needed a game and so did we.” It will be the first ever meeting of the teams.
