Lady Vandals Fall to Wells

The Eureka County High volleyball team kicked off their 2014 divisional season against the Wells Leopards at home this past Friday afternoon.

The Lady Vandals continued their trend of playing very close games during their early season. All 4 games of the match against the Lady Leopards were decided by four points or less. Although the games were very competitive, Eureka ended up on the wrong side of three out of the four games. The scores were 21-25 Wells, 22-25 Wells, 27-25 Eureka, and 23-25 Wells. The Lady Leopards squeaked by Eureka as the games could of gone either way.

One of the brighter aspects of the match for the Lady Vandals was their serving. Beth Damele, Angela Porter, and Amanda Ketzenberg each had 13 serves. Shara Green had 12, Elsie Etchegaray had 11, and Annette Hayward had 10 to round out the strong serving performances for Eureka.

Other impressive stats from the Lady Vandals included Amanda Ketzenberg’s team leading six kills. Angela Porter and Elsie Etchegaray contributed two kills each. Beth Damele added five assists.

Head Coach Sherri Wilker explained the weakness that greatly contributed to Eureka’s divisional loss. “Our tip coverage cost us the game as Wells continued to find our weaknesses on defense with their tips,” Wilker stated. Although teams don’t like to start their divisional season with a loss, the very close game scores give Eureka a lot to look forward to moving forward. “We plan on taking each of our next league games one step at a time and we believe our team needs to stay focused and not look too far ahead,” Wilker concluded.

“We are eager to see the other teams in our league and eager for our rematch with Wells in Wells on Oct. 10,” Wilker explained. Eureka will continue their league schedule this Friday in Carlin beginning at 3 p.m. The Lady Vandals will look to even their record at 1-1 in division if they can defeat Carlin.
