The Eureka County High volleyball team played their 2015 Homecoming game on last Thursday against league opponent Wells. Wells is tied for first place in the division along with Owhyee, as Eureka currently sits third in the standings.

The Leopards showed Eureka why they are atop the league standings by winning the match in three straight games. The scores were 25-17, 25-22, and 25-16 all in favor of Wells. With the win, the Lady Leopards completed the season sweep of Eureka.

Lady Vandals senior Annette Hayward had a strong final homecoming game with 18 digs against the Lady Leopards.

On Saturday, Eureka play a non-league game against Tonopah and faired much better this time around. Eureka won the best out of five match with scores of 25-13 Eureka, 25-18 Tonopah, 25-23 Eureka and 25-18 Eureka.

Elsie Etchegaray fueled the Lady Vandals attack with 12 kills. Defensively, Ally Protani had 13 digs while Bridgette Bacon had 14 of her own.

Eureka has a league record of 6-2 which currently seeds them third going into the regional playoffs. This could change if Eureka can sweep Owhyee in their final league match of the year. If the Lady Vandals split or lose both matches against Owhyee, they will remain in third place.

Eureka coach Kati Benson mentioned, “I’m hoping we come in tough and play well enough to pick up a win.”

Regional playoffs for volleyball are Nov. 6-7 with opponents and times to be determined.
