Lady Vandals hit snag, lose back to back games

The Eureka County High girls basketball team has entered its roughtest stretch of their season so far. Eureka entered the last Friday’s league game against McDermitt with a 3-1 record, but dropped its last two to leave them searching for answers.

The Lady Vandals started off slow Friday night at home against McDermitt which proved costly.

“Poor shooting led to a 12 point deficit after the first quarter and we were never able to overcome it,” coach Travis Gallagher explained.

A slow start, coupled with match-up problems with McDermitt’s bigger post players made for a tough task. “

Oversized post players and good outside shooting on McDermitt’s end made it really difficult for us to match up with them,” Gallagher went on to add.

The Lady Vandals used late pressure to close the lead but ultimately ran out of time and lost the league game 55-48. Shara Green led Eureka with 15 points and Megan Damele added 11 points of her own. The loss against McDermitt gives Eureka a 3-2 league record and they sit in 3rd place in their league.

Eureka hosted White Pine High School on Tuesday, the 27th at the new gym in Eureka and the Lady Vandals lost to White Pine 43-35. Another gritty team gave Eureka trouble scoring the ball. A tough shooting night once again didn’t help Eureka against the Lady Bobcats.

Damele was the only Eureka player in double-figures. This loss gives Eureka a two-game losing streak as they hope to figure out their woes soon.

They will have to figure it out quickly as they have three straight home games starting Thursday night at 6 p.m. against Round Mountain. They play Carlin Friday night at 6 p.m. and Owhyee Saturday night at 4 p.m.

Carlin and Owhyee are both important league games for Eureka.

“We need both these confernece wins against Carlin and Owyhee to keep a good standing in the conference,” Gallagher said.

Eureka will hope to use their home court advantage this weekend and get back on track.
