Lady Vandals open up league play with wins

October 25, 2013 by Eric Dahlberg Leave a Comment

After tough outings against Battle Mountain and White Pine, the Eureka County High girls’ volleyball team rebounded on Saturday in a big way.

The Lady Vandals swept a double-header at McDermitt, 2-0, 2-0, winning all four games in runaway fashion (25-15, 25-15, 25-18, 25-17).

It was the first conference games of the season for Eureka, and assistant coach Karl Watts thinks his team learned a lot from the losses the previous week.

“We were just outplayed by White Pine and Battle Mountain, but I think winning the double-header on Saturday gave them some confidence going forward,” he said. “White Pine is a tough team, and we value those types of games because they make us stronger in the long run.”

Eureka continues its conference schedule this week when they take on Owyhee at home on Friday and travel to Tonopah on Saturday.

Friday’s game is set for a noon start and Saturday match will begin at 1 p.m.

“I like our chances in conference, we’re going to give it a good run,” Watts said. “I feel like we are right where we need to be as a team, and should challenge all the teams in front of us.”

The Lady Vandals J.V. team didn’t have a game last week, but fell to White Pine in a hard fought game the week before (24-26, 17-25).
