Lady Vandals Season Comes to a Close

It just wasn’t a good year for Eureka softball in 2018. The Lady Vandals dropped a 15-5 decision to Carlin last week to bring the season to a close with a 1-12 record.

They did start off well in the final game, getting four runs in the first inning. Five walks by Carlin pitcher Kyra Neptune, including four in a row and plus three steals of home plate by Cammie Skinner, Morgan Thomas, and C. Fitzwater accounted for three of the runs. T. Blake tried it too, but was thrown out at the plate to end the inning.

But Carlin came alive also in the inning, getting four runs of their own to tie the score.

Then the Railroaders added five runs each in the second and third innings for a commanding 14-4 lead.

Eureka did not score again until the fifth inning when Shauna Brown stole home.

Neptune started for Carlin. She lasted four innings, allowing two hits and four runs while striking out six.

Jenesis Dominguez had started for the Lady Vandals. She went one and two-thirds innings, allowing nine runs on eight hits and one strikeout.

Mikala Talbot also pitched for Eureka. She allowed six hits and six runs over two and two-thirds innings, with two strikeouts.

The girls were sure-handed and didn’t commit a single error. Brown made the most plays with four putouts.

Both teams were virtually criminal on the base paths. Carlin stole 14 and Eureka stole 11 with four of those being at home plate.

The Vandals did not make the playoffs in the 1A North-east. Wells (16-2) and Carlin will be the entrants in the regional playoffs in Wells this Friday and Saturday.

The tournament schedule has Wells (16-2) against Coleville (15-3) and Smith Valley (12-2) against Carlin on Friday. The championship is Saturday at 12:30.

Both teams will advance to the 1A state tournament May 17-19 at North Valley’s High School in Reno.

Pahranagat Valley (16-6) is the five-time defending state champion.
