Lady Vandals win pair; improve to 3-0 on season

September 19, 2013 by Eric Dahlberg Leave a Comment

The Eureka High School girls’ volleyball team is off to one of their hottest starts in recent memory.

After reaching the finals of the White Pine volleyball tournament last week, the Lady Vandals continued their fast start when they returned home for the first time this year, taking on Round Mountain on Thursday and Lund on Friday.

Eureka proved to be too much for both teams, first running away with the best of five series with Round Mountain. The Lady vandals swept all three games on the day (25-16, 25-22, 25-17).

“Round Mountain gave us a bit of a fight in a couple of our games, but we were able to pull it out,” said Eureka assistant coach Karl Watts.

Eureka had to quickly turn its attention to Lund the next day, as the two teams were set to battle it out in a double-header. Eureka won all four games of the best of three series, 25-22,25-15,25-8 and 25-11.

“They played really well against Lund, but it was a bit of a mismatch,” Watts said. “We were able to try out some different things that should give us some versatility in the future against tougher teams.”

The Lady Vandals will return home again this weekend for a pair of games against Smith Valley and Tonopah, putting their three game win streak on the line. Watts hopes the girls’ will continue working hard, and is very happy with the season so far.

“We are very happy with our start to the season,” Watts said. “Our hitters are really improving quickly, and we are just focusing on the fundamentals so we can build every week and get better.”
