Local Events Planned for Wildfire Awareness Month

May is Wildfire Awareness Month. In keeping with the theme, the University of Nevada Cooperative Extension is urging all residents of the state to prepare for wildfire year round.

No one knows when one might happen, it could be almost any time. Therefore, the Cooperative Extension is once again coordinating the collaborative efforts of federal, state and local fire services, public safety agencies, community organizations, and others to participate in Nevada Wildfire Awareness Month throughout May.

The theme chosen for this year’s efforts is “Prepare Now-Wildfire Knows No Season!”

Residents in wildfire prone communities are encouraged to prepare their homes and families, anticipate environmental conditions and take precautions on Red Flag Warning days and evacuate quickly if so requested by emergency responders.

Ed Smith, UNR Cooperative Extension natural resource specialist and director of the Living with Fire education program stated, “Wildfire occurs year round in Nevada. Examples include three large fires that occurred in the Reno-Carson City area in November and December, 2011, and January, 2012. “Knowing this,” he said,” residents in wildfire-prone areas need to be prepared, any time, any day.”

Events are being scheduled in parts of western Nevada as well to encourage residents to take precautionary action.

One event includes the Ember House Activity at the Eureka Community Firewise May 4 from 10:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Eureka County Fairgrounds, and at the Crescent Valley Fairgrounds Saturday, May 5 from 10:30 to 1 p.m.

The Ember House is a youth activity bean-bag toss game. Jamie Roice-Gomes of UNR said, “Kids throw bean bags or ping-pong balls that represent fire embers at a model of a house and they stick to the vulnerable parts of the house.”

Other information will be on fire-resistant plants and tips on defensible space and landscaping. There will be raffle prizes for kids and adults, free barbeque, and the appearance of Smokey Bear.
