Local schools to participate in ShakeOut

Celebrating the 100th anniversary of Nevada’s largest recorded earthquake, Eureka County school children will be participating in the Great Nevada ShakeOut, a simple and coordinated program where participants are taught to “drop, cover and hold on” during earthquakes.

The 7.1 magnitude quake in 1915 shook Pleasant Valley. Reports state that the trembling lasted forty seconds and was felt as far away as Boise, Id. and Salt Lake City, Utah.

The quake hit at 10:58 at night and was the third in a series of quakes that hit, sending residents in buildings scrambling out into the streets.

Reports from that era state that Eureka residents had been shaken severely.

Because of the quake of 1915, Nevada residents and business owners can now properly prepare themselves for when future earthquakes hit.

The Great Nevada ShakeOut will be held on Oct. 15 at 10:15 a.m. To participate, sign up at: Shakeout.org/Nevada. Currently 568,000 are registered to attend. Last year, 570,000 Nevadans partook.

A spokeswoman for Eureka County School District said that schools in the county would be involved.
