Nevada State Old Time Fiddlers Contest slated for next week

The Nevada State Fiddlers contest is slated for Friday, May 16 and Saturday, May 17 at the Eureka Opera House with an itinerary performances prepared for the weekend. 

Friday, May 16 from 6:30 – 9:30 p.m.

Friday’s events are the Hot Fiddle Contest, Twin Fiddling Exhibition and Judges Performances. The judges will include Monte Gaylord, Tashina Lindley and Patricia Scott. Accompanists include Eric Anderson and Ben LiaBraaten. Master of ceremonies will be Ralph Cuda.

The Hot Fiddle Contest requires a $15 entry fee. There will be first-, second- and third-place winners.

Saturday, May 17 

Registration is from 7 to 8:30 am, with the event starting at 8:30 with a welcoming reception for the judges. Registration for the Open Division contest is $10 for ages 17 and younger and $15 for ages 18+. Round one of the competition begins at 9 a.m., with senior-senior (age 70+), small fry (age 8 and under), junior-junior (up through age 12), senior (age 55-69), adult (age 18-54) and junior (age 13-17) age-divisions. After round one, lunch will commence. Round two is expected to begin at 1:30 p.m., with a final performance of the grand champion (one round only).

Prizes will be awarded after each age division in round two. Each age division will hold a first-through-fifth-place sport for correlating winners. In the event of a tie, the players will be asked to do a tie-breaker hoedown within a two-minute time frame.

Contestants will be expected to play three tunes consisting of a hoedown, a waltz and a tune of choice excluding hoedown/waltz. Contestants are expected to play their tunes within a five-minute window, with a 10-second grace period in between. Winners in the senior, senior-senior, and adult divisions with the highest scores will be declared the Nevada State Adult champions.

The cost is $25 to register for the Grand Champion Division.The Nevada State Old-Time Fiddlers’ contest is a 501c3 non-profit organization. Registration can be done beforehand at www.nevadastateold-timefiddlerscontest.com/registration-form and emailed to kim50now@yahoo.com. It can also be completed the day of the event at 8 a.m.
