New deputy, EMS training, and road improvements discussed at CVTAB meeting

April 4, 2025 by Lisa J. Wolf Leave a Comment

At the April 2 Crescent Valley Town Advisory Board meeting, Sheriff Miles Umina shared that a new hire will be starting April 14 for the north. The new officer, who has prior Marine military police experience, will attend the POST academy in July but will finish most of his field training before he goes so when he comes back from the academy, he’ll be on duty within a month or two.

Umina had a walk-through of the Crescent Valley Substation March 2 with the commissioners and Public Works to look at both temporary and long-term solutions for the growing agency.

CVTAB Vice Chair and Crescent Valley Fire Department Chief Jeremy Rice reported firefighters will be attending the upcoming EMR and certified emergency vehicle operations training so they can start responding with EMS. Rice is arranging a class for the new equipment they received.

He pointed out that AB313 is advancing through the legislature and would create an exemption from governmental services taxes on a vehicle registered by a person who is a volunteer firefighter.

In preparing for Crescent Valley Fun Days, June 21, Marcial Evertsen will help transport a blow-up bounce house from Battle Mountain for use during the event. Volunteers are needed to help with Fun Days.

Commissioner Schoenwald gave a summary update on the Commission meeting of April 1 in Crescent Valley.

He noted services will be May 31 at 11 a.m. at the community center followed by a potluck in remembrance of Barbara Dugan, and he agendized waiving the community center fees.

Schoenwald related chip seal paving will be put in place in Crescent Valley in August on Airport and 8th Streets.

Schoenwald asked how the CVTAB and community felt about the potential for an electronic reader board. The response was positive, with discussion about the best placement in town for the board.

There was discussion on a new position budgeted and being created for a casual employee shared between the Sheriff’s Office and Public Works to be stationed at the Crescent Valley Town Hall. Sheriff Umina said, “It’s a casual position that has been funded for the past two years, but a job description had never been done.” He noted that it would be nice to have a local person to handle both Public Works and Sheriff’s Office public interactions, such as notary service, concealed weapon permits and water bill payments.

In public comment, Marcial Evertsen related he almost has everything ready for the Easter Egg Hunt on April 19.

Noting that the commission proclaimed April as Donate Life Month, Member Laura Shivers encouraged people to become donors. “If you donate, you have a shot at saving someone’s life. If you’re on the fence and wondering, ask one of the sheriffs; they’ll help you.”

Sergeant Brian Shoaf, a volunteer with Nevada Donor Network, related there are currently over 700 people on a donor list. Note that declaring you want to be a donor through the Nevada DMV does not register you with the Nevada Donor Network.

Shoaf said he can register people. “One person’s donation saved 76 people,” Shoaf said. A live organ donation two weeks ago helped 52 people in Nevada as well as in the Philippines and all over the world. Shoaf has further information for those interested.

Questions about the future of the Crescent Valley Medical Clinic were raised by Holly Davis, who was informed that Chairman Rich McKay clarified “there isn’t a plan to cut medical services for Crescent Valley.”
