Other Towns Named Eureka in the US

How many towns around the country have the name Eureka? At least towns with high schools carrying that name anyway? How many do you know?

Let’s take a look as to what the National Federation of High Schools says.

There are seven teams from a town called Eureka, including Eureka, NV.

In addition, there are three towns named Eureka, or part of, where the high school has a different name.

Consider Eureka, Missouri, founded in 1858. There are two church operated schools in town, but the public school has the nickname Wildcats. Located 17 miles west of St. Louis on Interstate 44, it is a city of about 10,500.

Eureka, Illinois, nicknamed the Hornets, is 18 miles east of Peoria, Illinois. A small community of about 5,300. President Ronald Reagan graduated from Eureka College in 1932.

Eureka, Kansas is a small town of about 2,400 some 63 miles east of Wichita.

Their nickname is the Tornado, and being located in what is often known as Tornado Alley, on July 7, 2016, the town was greatly damaged by a tornado, including 50 homes. No loss of life was reported.

Eureka, California, with the nickname Loggers, is located on the southern shore of Arcata Bay on the northern California coast on U.S. Highway 101.

A city of a little over 27,000, it is 270 miles north of San Francisco, 100 miles south of the Oregon border. It is the largest coastal city between San Francisco and Portland and once played a major role in the historic West Coast lumber trade.

The greater metropolitan area includes College of the Redwoods and Humboldt State University.

The Walt Disney cartoon fictional town of Duckburg, where Donald Duck and his three nephews Huey, Dewey and Louie, plus uncle Scrooge McDuck were supposed to live was based on the city of Eureka, California.

Consider also Eureka/Bowdle, South Dakota. It is really in Eureka, South Dakota, the in north central part of the state, population about 850. The Patriots do not play baseball or softball.

Eureka, Montana, population 1,100, in the extreme northwest corner of the state, 66 miles west of Kalispell, is in Lincoln County, Montana and the high school goes by the name Lincoln County, just like Panaca, Nevada does.

There is also a Eureka Springs, Arkansas and Eureka Mills, South Carolina.

Since they have a dual name they don’t really count in this list, but we’ll have a look at them anyway.

Eureka Mills is an unincorporated community of about 1,500, a suburb of Chester, South Carolina and the students are bussed into Chester High.

Eureka Springs, Arkansas (pop. 2,074) is about 11 miles from the Missouri state line in the Ozark Mountain range. The Highlanders compete in all the major sports, and have had very successful boys and girls cross country programs.

Then consider the fictional town of Eureka, Oregon featured in the 2006-2012 U.S. TV series Eureka. However, the program was really filmed in British Columbia. A high school for the town was rarely, if ever, mentioned.

So be it for Eureka, and admittedly maybe some were missed in this article, but probably none have the colorful history that is rightly claimed by Eureka, Nevada, be they Vandals or anything else.
