When Nick West and Russ Bishop of the Red Barn General Store moved to Crescent Valley in 2017, they noticed a food desert and “that people had to travel up to 120 miles round-trip for their basic needs,” West said.
“We thought we could bring a small general store to the community that offered some fresh food options to help them fill in between their in-town trips. Things like a tomato. Maybe they’re making tacos and they need just a tomato to finish dinner, a head of lettuce. While we can’t be the one-stop-all to meet all your grocery needs, we hope the community can find convenience and at least be able to get a fresh gallon of milk, here or there or a fresh loaf of bread.”

The Red Barn strives to be a convenient community resource, offering milk, produce, other grocery items and a small deli.
West said, “As we kind of polled what people wanted, they were looking for things that a small deli might provide, so in 2024, we added a small deli to offer fresh-made sandwiches and salads and things like that.”
The Red Barn is open Monday through Friday from 5 a.m. to 8 p.m. and Saturdays and Saturdays from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.
“We recently got our liquor license, so we are now stocking beer and plan on bringing liquor and wine in over the next few months,” West said.
The Red Barn has begun a farmers and flea market the first Saturday of each month, and “there’s no charge unless they want to rent a table, but otherwise, there’s no charge for them to set up a 10-by-10 area and sell anything legal.” West said, “That’s starting to take off and we might offer it twice a month next year, but for the first year we’re just doing once a month.”
The Red Barn now has the world’s largest Coors Light can. “It holds 64,000 ounces, and if that were full of beer it would cost you $8,970.”
West noted, “We’re always open to take special orders to try to help save them a trip into town. We have deliveries come in a few times a week, so if they let us know they need something, we’ll do our best to source it for them.”
The Red Barn is expanding its gluten free, sugar-free and vegan and vegetarian offerings as well. They are available to do in-town deliveries.
West related, “We’re always willing to help support a community cause. We frequently donate to the assorted fundraiser like the barbecue and the fire fund.”
The Red Barn offers regular free items to customers. July’s free vegetable or fruit freebie was a choice of a personal-size watermelon or a bag of Cutie mandarin oranges. Limit one selection per family, while supplies last. No rainchecks. Fridays and Saturdays from 3 to 7 p.m., the Red Barn offers freshly-made pizza, which is available for free in-town delivery with pre-orders welcome by calling (775) 468-7770.
The Eureka Sentinel is available at the Red Barn.
