Eureka senior C.W. Landry prepares to throw a pitch during the Vandals 10-9 loss to Round Mountain Tuesday.

A late score spoiled the Vandals return to baseball action after Spring break.

In the non-league game Tuesday with Round Mountain, the Knights broke a 9-all tie in the top of the seventh inning when a one out ground ball to the shortstop that scored a runner from third base. The Vandals then did not score in their last at bat and lost a 10-9 decision.

Eureka had 11 hits, Round Mountain got eight and both teams committed three errors.

The Vandals got on the scoreboard at the beginning with two in the first inning, then added three in the second.

C.W. Landry singled in the first inning scoring Bryson Wells and Gage Hayward.

In the second inning, the boys put up three runs with a walk, a single, and a double by Mikel Lacovara.

They added four more in the third inning on six hits, all singles, to take a 9-2 lead.

But that would be the last runs for the Vandals and the Knights began to chip away at the lead, getting three runs in the fifth inning and four more in the sixth to tie the game at 9.

Eureka used four pitchers. Landry was the starter. He gave up two runs on one hit, struck out two and walked two in his two-and-a-third innings. Wells, Chance Trindle and Shane Lacovara each contributed relief work, but they surrendered eight runs on seven hits.

Two players were both 2-for-4 for the Knights on the day. Wells and Hooper were 2-for-3 for Eureka.

The Lady Vandals softball team cancelled their game on Tuesday.

This Friday, the boys and girls have double-header league action with Pyramid Lake. On Wednesday, April 18 both teams host Carlin.

And the track team also returns to action Friday at the Ward Coates Invitational in Elko.
